CHRISAL Probiotic Cleaning Products

chrisalcleaningproductsOur offices, homes and cars are teeming with microorganisms. Hard to believe, but there are 3.2 million bacteria per square inch of your toilet bowl, another 17,964 bacteria per square inch near your kitchen sink drain and the average office desktop has 400 times more bacteria than the average office toilet seat. What can you do to protect yourself and your family from biofilm pathogens?

How do we pick up the pathogens anyway? How do they make us sick? Pathogenic bacteria can attack through mucosal tissue, so putting fingers in your nose or mouth will carry the germ to the perfect place to multiply. Rubbing your eyes is another way for germs to attack. If you breath in or swallow these microbes you've opened the door for illness. Of course, if your have any open cuts or sores they are susceptible to the organisms.

If you are running low on sleep, feel tired and run down, or if you're immuno-compromised you are more susceptible. As we age, we all become more immunocompromised. And don't forget that even short term stress can render us susceptible to pathogens. Long term stress is very damaging to our ability to fight infection.

Every day there's another news report talking about the fact that the over-use of antibiotics has creating a new generation of "super-bacteria" that are resistant to even the newer antibiotics. The germ experts told us to use antibacterial gels on our hands, then reversed their position when consistent use of the antibacterial products caused new resistant bacteria to form.

We are becoming a nation of germophobes. And we needn’t be—at least where friendly microbes are concerned. There are many health-promoting bacteria, also called "probiotics", that help keep harmful microbes in check and these good bacteria may even stimulate the immune system, among other benefits.

All of Chrisal's Probiotic Cleaning Products contain good bacteria. These friendly microbes compete with pathogens for resources. So, instead of killing all of the bacteria (both good and bad) - like an antibacterial cleaner, Chrisal lays down a microscopic film of good bacteria that engage in a battle with pathogens for food. And the good bacteria win! Then like a good bacteria should, they eat the dead carcasses of the dead pathogens. The friendly flora cause the sticky bioflim that the germs live in to break down, and dirt and grime that were stuck in the biofilm are released. The good guys keep eating and working for up to 72 hours - whereas an antibacterial cleaner can only give you about 10 minutes of a pathogen free environment.

"CHRISAL Clean" - means clean down to the microscopic level.

Give Chrisal A Workout

give.chrisal.a.workoutWe go to the gym to get strong and fit. Our sports club is the last place we would think would be a risk to our health. But research shows that workout facilities can be a breeding ground for illnesses ranging from colds and viruses to some pretty serious bacterial infections.

It's time to bring Chrisal along on out workouts. Grab a can of Allergy-Free and a few clean paper towels and stick them in your gym bag. You'll feel a lot better, because we know there have been times that you've noticed some sniffling, sneezing and coughing going on - all over the same equipment that you are using.

Here is a Chrisal Checklist for the Gym:

(1) Wash your hands thoroughly with Chrisal Skin Soap or Chrisal Biogel before and after exercise. After touching weights and machine hand rails, try your best to keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, ears and mouth until you can lather up again.

(2) Wipe down the machines, preferably with Chrisal Allergy Free before and after use. Gyms should disinfect equipment on a regular basis, but it is good gym etiquette to make sure you don't leave a pool of sweat behind you. And it will give you piece of mind to know they are clean before you use them, because you cleaned them!

(3) Bring your own sweat towel, actually, bring two! Place one on machines and benches before you sit down to protect yourself. Use the other to blot sweat off your body. If you bring your own towel, you can ensure it is clean and germ free.

(4) If using a water bottle, wash it! Spray the mouth of the bottle with Chrisal Probiotics if you think you accidentally touched it.

(5) Wipe off your shoes with Chrisal Cleaning Formula and spray the inside of your sneakers with Chrisal Allergy Free. Tennis shoes have a large amount of bacteria, more than most toilet bowls!

(6) Wear flip-flops when walking in the shower or sauna. Fungi and bacteria thrive in damp shower stalls. Mist your flip-flops with Chrisal before and after every use.

(7) Sit on your towel or wear shorts in the sauna to avoid direct contact with the seating, which may contain germs and bacteria. Or at a minimum spray the area on the bench that you are going to sit on with Chrisal Allergy free.

(8) Change our of your sweaty clothing. You are more likely to develop a yeast or bacterial infection from leaving them on than from anything else you would encounter at the health club. So shed the shorts right after your workout. If you have to leave the workout clothes on for awhile, mist them with Chrisal Allergy Free to minimize the chance of infection and reduce odor at the same time.

CHRISAL in the Kitchen

Chrisal.In.the.KitchenWhat's the difference between clean and sanitized?

Clean is when all visible debris is removed. When I brush off or wipe down the counter tops, they're clean. Sanitized is the elimination (as much as possible) of bad bacteria and the stabilization of good bacteria. When I use Chrisal Probiotics the counter tops are sanitized.

But bathrooms are the problem area for pathogenic bacteria, right?

While bathrooms get a bad rap when it comes to germs, it's the kitchen that actually harbors more bacteria than any other room in the home. Kitchens that appear to be shiny, clean and spotless can still harbor dangerous levels of harmful bacteria. The place where we prepare and eat our food is often not as clean as the bathroom? A very scary thought.

Who is FAT TOM and why do I want him out of my kitchen?

FAT TOM is an acronym used to remember the 6 requirements of pathogens:

• Food: Bad Bacteria need food to grow.
• Acid: Neutral acidity is where bacteria grows best.
• Time: Bacteria will double every twenty minutes as long as it is in a favorable environment.
• Temperature: Bacteria thrives in temperatures between 40 degrees F. and 140 degrees F. This is known as the "temperature danger zone".
• Oxygen: Bacteria generally grows in an aerobic environment.
• Moisture: Bacteria needs a moist environment to grow.

How can I disrupt Fat Tom so that bad bacteria can't live in my kitchen?

Chrisal Probiotics compete with the pathogens for food and oxygen – and the good bacteria win! Chrisal probiotics also lower humidity, which interferes with FAT TOM. Depriving the pathogens of food, oxygen and moisture results in death of the pathogenic bacteria. After using Chrisal, you are left with kitchen surfaces that have an invisible, healthy coating of good bacteria, which keep on working for up to 72 hours.

Germs Lurking in the Shower

germs.in.showerRecently a study was released in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that revealed showerheads can act as incubators for biofilm. As water passes through a showerhead, it picks up the bacteria in the biofilm (as much as 100 times more bacteria than in water that has not touched biofilm) and sprays it directly on your body or sends it flying into the air to be ingested into your lungs.

I know it's hard to not to have your shower ruined by thoughts of bacteria flying all around. To cut down on the bacteria in your bathroom, try switching from a plastic to a metal showerhead. Plastic can serve as a bacteria breeding ground. Metal showerhead harbor fewer pathogens than plastic one.

Make sure to use Chrisal Probiotic Bathroom Cleaner to thoroughly clean the shower head every 2 to 3 days.

Every 6 months or so:

1. Remove your shower head.

2. Put the shower head into a container filled with Chrisal Bathroom Cleaner. (If you can’t remove your shower head, fill a small plastic baggie with 2-3 inches of Chrisal Cleaner and rubber band or tape it to the shower head, with the faceplate completely submerged).

3. Soak in Chrisal for 15-20 min.

4. Scrub off softened mineral deposits with a clean toothbrush or similar brush.

5. Rinse with hot water.

Chrisal In The Office

chrisal_in_the_officeChrisal Probiotics can't make any promises about that mountain of paperwork on your desk, but we do want to inform you about a couple of important research studies completed regarding germs in the office. A research study done by the University of Arizona found that the average office desktop has 400 times more bacteria than the average office toilet seat.

This tidbit of information might inspire you to clear your desk of all paperwork and give the desk surfaces an immediate Chrisal cleaning. For best results, your desk and equipment should be wiped down about every 3 days.

Equipment? Yes, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 2005 revealed that computer keyboards could act as reservoirs for the so-called superbug, MRSA. MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is a strain of staph that is resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. This staph is bad news and can even be fatal. So wiping down your keyboard is an important part of office hygiene.

The phone is typically the dirtiest piece of equipment in an office, because it goes straight to the user's mouth, and rarely gets cleaned. Not anymore. Chrisal recommends a quick wipe down of the mouth and ear piece and don't forget the dial keys. While you're cleaning the office phone, don't forget your personal digital assistant (PDA) and cell phone.

The bacteria levels on a typical office fax machine are three times higher than the germs on your bathroom door handle. So, remember to wipe down the fax, copy machine, printer and other equipment that you handle in your office. A paper towel dampened with Chrisal Kitchen or Bathroom Cleaner will reduce pathogens in your work environment.

Even the reference books and documents that you use at your desk could use a quick spray with Chrisal Allergy Free. When you open a dusty book, an air current is created which pushes up the dust accumulated on and in the books directly to your nose. The paper surfaces act as dust magnets and hold the dust particles as long as they are not cleaned. Sources of dust include dust mites and microorganisms. Dust mites are microscopic insects, found in dusty places, and are the cause of allergy difficulties. Microorganisms are different kinds of bacteria and viruses transferred by dust particulate. Bacteria by themselves can constitute dust particles. The organic dust (dust particle contaminated with microorganism) can cause illness by three mechanisms 1- Infection 2- Intoxication, 3- Reducing immune system defense.

Here is a Chrisal checklist for your office:

1. Door handles. “Most germs get passed around through hand to hand contact or touching something that’s contaminated,” says Joe Rubino a microbiologist who works for Reckitt Benckiser, maker of Lysol. With Chrisal you can leave a microscopic barrier of friendly flora on the door knob. The probiotics keep working to minimize pathogens for up to 3 days.

2. Carpeting. The biggest problem with office carpeting is mold, so office carpets should be steam cleaned regularly with an industrial vacuum that has a filter. Between steam cleaning carpet should be routinely sprayed with Chrisal Allergy Free to minimize mold and pathogens.

4. Communal coffeepot. People may not wash their hands before they brew or pour the java, says Christine Turley, director of clinical research at the University of Texas Medical Brand Sealy Center for Vaccine Development. Since people can be contagious for hours or days before they show symptoms of sickness, they leave germs on the pot handle. Wipe down the coffee pot with a paper towel dampened with Chrisal Kitchen Cleaner.

5. Communal Microwave oven. It’s great to have it to heat up your lunch, but the control panel is constantly being jabbed by employees - who may be sick or coming down with something. If you like to nuke your lunch, be sure to wipe your hands immediately before and afterwards with Chrisal Biogel.

6. Water coolers. They may be the stereotypical “gathering place,” but they’re also a big threat to staying healthy, according to David Fowler, at Wellness Enterprises. "The little spout and the internal mechanism are breeding ground for viruses and bacteria.” Plus, people are always thrusting their plastic bottles and cups right up to the spout to fill them. For all you know, these people may be coming down with a flu. A little spray of Chrisal Allergy Free on the nozzle is a good idea.

7. Shared phones and keyboards. “The data is limited, but it does seem as though phones and keyboards, when shared, can be a potential source of infection,” says Dr. Joseph Rahimian, infectious disease specialist at St. Vincent’s Hospital. “It certainly can’t hurt to disinfect them before you use them when you are sharing them.” Chrisal goes one better, killing pathogens but leaving a healthy layer of good bacteria to keep on reducing the pathogens over the next 72 hours.

8. Pens and pencils. People tend to put them in their mouth and bite on them, Rahimian says. “This makes it very easy to transmit infection.” To avoid this, carry your own and don’t share with anyone else. Use Chrisal Allergy Free to mist them and wipe them down.

9. Hands. The Center for Disease Control says, "Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others." Wash your hands with Chrisal Skin Soap with warm running water for at least 20 seconds. If you can't wash your hands then rub Chrisal Biogel on your hands to significantly reduce the number of germs on your skin. Try not to put your hands around your hose, mouth and eyes.

10. Stay Home. The hardest decision to make for your health and the health of others is when to stay home. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs can live for a long time (some can live for 2 hours or more) on surfaces like doorknobs, desks, and tables. When you are sick or have flu symptoms, stay home, get plenty of rest, and check with a health care provider as needed. Your employer may need a doctor’s note for an excused absence. Remember: Keeping your distance from others may protect them from getting sick. Common symptoms of the flu include:

• fever (usually high)
• headache
• extreme tiredness
• cough
• sore throat
• runny or stuffy nose
• muscle aches, and
• nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, (much more common among children than adults).

Toilets Sneeze

do.toilets.sneezeYou may have been surprised to find that there are more germs per square inch on your kitchen counter top than there are on your toilet seat. But, don't relax too much with regard to bathroom cleaning, yet.

According to two studies, toilets “sneeze” when flushed, spewing aerosolized plumes of moisture, bacteria and viruses over many bathroom surfaces. The first study, conducted in 1975 and ominously entitled “Microbiological Hazards of Household Toilets,” showed that this menacing sneeze produced a cloud that stayed airborne for up to two hours and traveled six to eight feet up and out from the toilet.

Scientists say that saying "kazuntite" is not enough. Environmental microbiologist Dr. Charles Gerba, recommends the following precautions for worried flushers:

  • Keep your toothbrush inside a cabinet if it is in the same room as your toilet.
  • Always, close the toilet lid before flushing.
  • Be especially careful when cleaning the toilet, especially if a family member is sick.
  • Wipe the toilet seat with tissue before and after using.

All toilet parts should be cleaned regularly with Chrisal Probiotic Bathroom Cleaner including the seat, rim, lid, bowl and flushing handle. Leave a layer of good bacteria on the surfaces of your toilet in order to keep pathogens under control for up to 72 hours.

Make sure that your sneezing toilet is CHRISAL Clean.
Then you can say kazuntite!

Chrisal Doesn't Mask Odors- It Removes Them

Chrisal_doesnt_mask_odorsIt could be skunk spray, pet urine, manure, doggy odor, or smelly tennis shoes. Even tobacco smoke in walls, curtains, furniture or vehicles - the point is, you want that awful odor gone. Most products try to mask the smell. They merely try to cover up a noxious odor with a different, stronger odor - hopefully, a pleasant stronger odor. If you've ever walked into a public bathroom and smelled sickly sweet cherry or been blasted by an automatic mist of vanilla from a container on the wall - you've been the victim of a masking product. But masking odors wear off - or worse, they introduce dangerous compounds into the very air they are trying to clean. Chrisal Probiotics don't mask odors they remove them at their source. Chrisal attacks the problem rather than cover up the symptoms.

Odors as we perceive them are really oxidizing organic particles. Oxidizing means that the organic particles are chemically reacting with oxygen. The anti-oxidants emitted from Chrisal's probiotics cancel the odor on contact. Odor control is faster, more environmentally-friendly and longer-lasting than any masking chemical, natural citrus or enzyme in alcohol product can provide.

There are four basic steps in the procedure for removing serious odors:

Locate and Eradicate the Source of the Odor

The odor might be coming from a floor drain p-trap that has dried out and is allowing sewer gases in. Urine odors can build-up in bathrooms areas and can be especially bad in grout lines. Trash cans are odor culprits. Drains. Garbage Disposals. Diaper bins. The Refrigerator. You need to locate the source of the odor in order to be able to treat it.

Use Chrisal Products

Getting rid of the odor source is the first step. Odor removal should not just be spraying aerosols or placing a strong chemical cake inside the toilet. Chrisal cleaning products deal with the bacterial source of odor. Chrisal decreases unpleasant smells through microbial absorption of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. As ammonia oxidizes it putrefies. The biological products in Chrisal digest ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methane and even mercaptans. A mercaptan is an organic compound similar to alcohol but instead of oxygen it contains sulfur. Sulfur compounds are what you smell in: bad breath, a struck match, onions or a rotting corpse. Mercaptans are known for their penetrating noxious odor. Chrisal also degrades organic, volatile, fatty acids that can contribute to unpleasant smells. The microorganisms in Chrisal actually feed on the high levels of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and methane that cause bad odors.

When odors are down, flies are not attracted to the area. Over time, you will see a decrease in fly populations in areas that are routinely cleaned with Chrisal.

Clean Frequently

It is recommended that Chrisal cleaners or aerosol products be used on areas prone to foul odors a minimum of every 2 to 3 days. Frequency of cleaning is important in high traffic areas.

Take the trash out frequently and mist the trash bin with Chrisal Allergy Free to keep odors in check. Trash cans also need to be put on a cycle for washing with warm water and Chrisal All-Purpose Cleaner. The frequency that trash can need to be washed will depend on how much organic material ends up on the sides and bottom of your trash container.

Use Chrisal aerosol on your vacuum cleaner. Lightly mist the area that the bag is housed in and change the bag frequently.

Keep Cleaning Equipment Clean

Poor cleaning practices can lead to odor problems. If the mop head smells bad, you just transport that odor throughout the entire area that you mop. If you are wiping down a counter with a sponge or washrag that has mildewed, you spread the mildew odor. Vacuums can lead to odor problems if you move from room to room with a vacuum bag that reeks.
Remember, nothing removes odor problems like thorough cleaning with fresh, clean equipment. Use Chrisal products to eliminate the odor source and to change the microbial ecosystem to one that is balanced and healthy.

Chrisal Hard Floor Care

chrisal_hard_floor_careThe young woman in the supermarket studied shelves of floor cleaners with an intensity that intrigued me. When she finally selected a product, I had to ask. "Why the extended concentration on these products?"

Her answer elicited a laugh, though more at her innocent sincerity than the answer itself. "My one-year-old likes to lick the floor. It's driving me crazy." As we further discussed the subject, the depth of her concern became understandable. Her dogs drag their butts along these same floors trying to express their anal glands. Now add the fact, that her one-year-old son (the apple of her eye) thinks it's hysterically funny to lick the floor. My guess is the look on his Mom's face is desperately comical.

You may not deal with this exact situation, but the truth is - we all want clean floors. Not just shiny. Not just crumb-free. No, we'd like our floors to be germ free. Finally, there is an answer in the form of Chrisal PIP Probiotic Floor Cleaner, a versatile and efficient cleaner enriched with safe probiotic bacteria. Chrisal PIP Probiotic Floor Cleaner can be applied to all kinds of hard flooring including:

  • Tile
  • Natural stone
  • Linoleum
  • Engineered wood
  • hardwood
  • Laminate flooring

Chrisal's special cleaner creates a stable and healthy micro biota on your hard floor surfaces. The strongly concentrated probiotic formula lasts a long time because you dilute it with water before using. Chrisal PIP Probiotic Floor Cleaner degreases and cleans while at the same time removing unpleasant odors. It cleans hard floors with no streaking, leaving a sanitized, shiny surface. While cleaning at the microscopic level, Chrisal utilizes environmentally-friendly probiotics, enzymes, and detergents to break down biofilm and release trapped dirt. The friendly flora in Chrisal compete with pathogenic bacteria for resources, thus the number of pathogens on you floor decrease significantly. No harsh chemicals are used in Chrisalcleaning products, so they are biodegradable, non-flammable, and non-volatile. Although Chrisal doesn't recommend licking the floor, we also know that licking a "Chrisal Clean" floor is certainly better than licking one that has been cleaned with traditional cleaners.

CHRISAL Carpet Care

chrisal_carpet_careChrisal knows that for many homes and businesses carpet offers more versatility, comfort and health benefits than other flooring options. It is also more "budget-friendly" than most other choices and there are styles to coordinate with every décor. However, carpet also can look clean when it is actually harboring harmful germs and bacteria.

Germs and Bacteria

Germs and pathogenic microorganisms of all kinds are tracked onto your carpeting. The use of treated door mats cannot prevent this, but may retard the process. The germs we track in on our carpets are alive and thriving in our carpet. As long as they have the resources required for life, they continue to breed and grow.

Sand and Grit

We also track in sand and grit on our shoes, which become deeply embedded in carpet. This rough little particles cause abrasion of the tips and sides of carpet fibers. If sand and grit are not thoroughly removed from carpet, your carpet will begin to look dull.

Dirt

Dirt is comprised of an assortment of minerals and chemicals. Humidity or moisture tracked onto dirt in your carpet can act as a catalyst, causing some chemicals to react with the carpet dye. This can actually change the color of the carpet if it remains over long periods of time.

Disinfectants

Many disinfectant products and harsh detergents can affect carpet dye.

Soapy, Sticky Residue

Conventional carpet shampoos, dry foams and sprays cause rapid resoiling because it is difficult to extract the chemicals used in these methods. Have you ever noticed a spot or stain resurface after you cleaned it and thought it was gone? You only pushed the stain a little deeper. And the sticky chemical residue is now acting like a magnet for new dirt.
This all sounds overwhelming and a little scary. Luckily, with a little effort and Chrisal you can keep your carpets clean and sanitary and prolong your carpet's life. Below is the Chrisal plan for healthy carpets.

Vacuum - Vacuum - Vacuum

bout 90% of all soil is dry particulate and can be easily removed by normal vacuuming. Only about 10% is oily and needs special attention. Vacuuming removes dirt that dulls the carpet's appearance. Be sure to mist the vacuum bag chamber with Chrisal Allergy Free to cut down on odor and dust mite allergens. And change the vacuum bag frequently!
Spot Treatment

Use Chrisal Carpet Cleaner to clean up spills promptly. The sooner you get to the spill the better.

  • Scoop up as much of the spill as possible with a spoon or towel.
  • Blot. Blot. Blot. Do not rub or scrub. Press clean white cloths onto the spot or stain to remove excess moisture.
  • Make up Chrisal Carpet Cleaner mix to use on the stain. Use warm - NOT HOT - water to dilute the cleaner as directed on the bottle.
  • Do not use too much cleaner. More is not better. It is just a waste of product.
  • Apply the Chrisal Carpet Cleaning mixture and let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Rinse the area with warm clean water and blot. Blot. Blot. Blot
  • Place several white paper towels on the area to soak up remaining moisture. Weight the towels with a heavy non-staining object - such as a ceramic dish.
  • Stubborn stains may require more than one treatment.

Mist Carpets with Chrisal Allergy free Between Cleanings

Shake the can of Chrisal Allergy Free.

  • Hold the can upright and spray entire surface of carpet with light sweeping motions.
    Professional Carpet Cleaning.
  • Repeat this in high traffic areas every 3 days to keep reduce the presence of pathogenic microorganisms and allergens in the carpet.

Your carpets should be professionally cleaned about every 12 months. When cleaned and maintained correctly, the carpet life is extended. Your carpet will not be damaged if cleaned correctly and on a regular basis. It is the unseen bacteria, soils and allergens that cause carpet damage. However, select a reputable carpet cleaning company. Don't fall for bait and switch programs that sound too good to be true. A professional carpet cleaner will include spot and stain removal, heavy soiling, deodorizing etc. in the price quoted.

Chrisal Works On Musty Washer Odor

boyonwasherThere are some disgusting things that go into a washing machine. Dirty socks, filthy underwear and soiled baby clothes can all find their way into the washing machine. Problems with washers developing unpleasant odors are pretty common. Try to identify the smell coming from the washer before trying to fix it.

Probably the most common odor problem is that of mildew. If you left a load running and the load became unbalanced the washer may have stopped leaving standing water. Or maybe you forgot a load and it sat in the washer for a few days. The answer to this problems is pretty simple. It's time to treat your washing machine with Chrisal Kitchen and Bathroom Cleaner. Cleaning the inside of the washing machine tub is always a good move for almost every kind of smell.

  • Begin a wash cycle using the machine’s warm setting. As the water rises, add Chrisal Cleaner to the soap dispenser.
  • Let the washing machine complete a full cycle.
  • Wipe down the tub and the rubber with a clean cloth to remove any loosened residue. (be careful that you don't cut yourself on any pins or sharp items that accidentally ended up lodged in the washer)
  • Rinse with cold water.
  • Take a deep sniff! Odors are gone!

If you continue to smell mildew after this process it may indicate that there is standing water somewhere inside the washing machine. Perhaps there is a leak in a hose and water is not escaping the machine itself. Taking the back off of the washing machine is the fastest way to find out if you have an interior leak, but unplug the machine first. A good cleaning of wet areas with Chrisal and replacing the leaky hose should remedy the odor emanating from the leak and standing water.

Protect Yourself From Mold

moldMold is a word that strikes terror into a home owner's heart. Molds are always part of the natural outdoor environment. Normally there are not large populations of mold indoors. It is impossible to completely rid the indoor environment of mold because there will always be some mold spores will be floating in dust. However, molds need moisture in order to grow. Once the mold lands in moisture, it will reproduce by means of miniature spores, which float through the air.

Molds produce allergens and irritants. Inhaling mold spores can cause sneezing, red eyes, runny nose and skin rashes. Allergies to mold are common and can be immediate or delayed. The most common symptoms are:

  • Sneezing.
  • Chronic cough.
  • Runny nose.
  • Nasal congestion.
  • Itchy, watery and red eyes.
  • Skin rashes and hives.
  • Sinus headaches.
  • Reduced lung capacity and difficulty breathing.

Mold can be found indoors in damp locations such as basements, bathrooms, or laundry rooms and mud rooms. Textiles, rugs, stuffed animals, books, or the back side of wallpaper can contain mold spores if they are kept in a damp place. Outdoors, mold lives in the soil, on compost, and on damp vegetation. Mold and mildew growth is quite visible when it grows along grout lines. However, other places that you should watch closely for mold are:

  • Closets and storerooms.
  • Foam pillows.
  • Refrigerator door gaskets.
  • Self-defrosting refrigerator water pans.
  • Refrigerator cooling coils.
  • Under-sink cabinets.
  • Room air conditioner units.
  • Washing machines.
  • Dryer vents.
  • Garbage cans.
  • Basements.
  • Carpets.
  • Sheetrock and wallboard.

When you find mold, if it is wise to limit your exposure by wearing a N- 95 respirator (available at many hardware stores). The N-95 cost anywhere from $12.00 to $25.00. In order to be effective, the respirator or mask must fit properly, so be sure to follow the instructions provided with the respirator. Gloves (natural rubber, polyurethane, neoprene. PVC or nitrile) that extend to the middle of the forearm are also recommended. Avoid touching moldy items with your bare hands. Finally, wearing goggles that do not have ventilation holes so that you will not get mold spores in your eyes.

Once you are wearing the appropriate protective clothing, the first thing to do is eliminate the source of moisture. Fixing plumbing leaks and other water problems is the first step that must be taken. Next, dry all items and surfaces completely. You can scrub mold off hard surfaces with Chrisal All-Purpose Cleaner and water and dry completely. Chrisal's Probiotic Formula is a culture of living organisms that when applied to a surface or introduced to an environment in which mold has been dominating, can provide a microbial balance that will change the environment so that it no longer supports mold domination. Bleaches and harsh chemical solutions will temporarily chemically shock an area leaving the surface open to re-population by mold spore floating in the air. Harsh chemicals also hurt other microbial systems as well, exacerbating the ecological imbalance that created the mold problem in the first place.

The reason that Chrisal's probiotic products work so well is the friendly bacteria colonies act as a drying agent, leaving the environment desiccated. The surface is protected from re-population because the mold spores must engage in a healthy, natural competition with Chrisal's good bacteria. Chrisal's ingredients do not kill mold; they are not biocides. The formula is not toxic. Instead it sets up a naturally healthy balance through the principle of competitive exclusion (CE). The bacillus bacteria occupy the niche that the mold would normally occupy. In addition, the beneficial bacilli produce antioxidants and enzymes which neutralize or break down toxic molds. This results in lower populations of mold spores, lower concentrations of toxic compounds produced by mold and therefore lower incidence of disease and fetid, mildew odor.

"Chrisal - Puts A Permanent Hold On Mold"

Grout - A Hiding Place For Germs

grout_a_hiding_place_for_germsThere was a time in my life (in the 1980s) when I chose huge, smooth, white tiles with white grout for my kitchen, breakfast room, hall and entryway flooring. When these floors were clean, they made the rooms appear bigger and the whole house looked spotless, fresh and inviting. Visitors oohhed and aahhed, then self-consciously kicked off their shoes at the door.

I spent a good part of my life on my hands and knees creating this illusion. I mopped and scrubbed. A couple of times a year I scoured every inch of the grout with a wire brush, bleach solution and a good bit of elbow grease. I eventually scrubbed the grout almost away trying to keep it sparkling white. If only Chrisal Probiotic Floor Cleaner had been invented back then.

Whether you've got tile floors, kitchen counters and backsplashes, or bathroom tile - the grout can get really grimy. In the bathroom, mold and mildew may be causing grout stains. In the kitchen, a combination of food stains and general household grime will blacken the floor grout. Counter grout can get mold and mildew where it stays damp too long. Bathroom grout can absorb urine and fecal material. This will leave the bathroom smelling bad even when you've just cleaned.

Why is grout so hard to clean? The answer is biofilm. The texture of grout and the fact that moisture collects there is especially conducive for the attachment of free-floating microorganisms to the surface. Initially, bacterial colonists anchor themselves using cell adhesion molecules such as pili, hairlike appendages. Soon the colony grows forming biofilm, a thin, invisible, resistant layer of microorganisms (such as bacteria, fungi, algae… ) that coat various surfaces. Bacteria commonly have means by which they can adhere to surfaces and to each other. The bacteria and fungi that build biofilms secrete extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that form a highly hydrated slime (or binding matrix) in which pathogens are embedded and held in dense agglomerations.

What this means in a nutshell is that a sticky layer of bacteria and germs clings to the grout and dirt gets embedded in this film. Not only does biofilm make your grout look dirty, it can also make you sick. Bacterial biofilms have great potential for causing human disease. Their ability to cause debilitating chronic infections has become very clear. The National Institutes of Health recently stated that more than 65% of all microbial infections are caused by biofilms. It should come as no surprise that biofilm researchers will also tell you that if you are immunocompromised you are at greater risk.

When are we immunocompromised? When we are sick. When we are exhausted. When we are stressed out. When we are aging.

So, what can we do - other than scrubbing the grout completely away with bleach? This is where Chrisal Bathroom, Kitchen, and Floor Cleaners come in. Chrisal's patented probiotic formula lays down a layer of good bacteria which can break up the biofilm, releasing the trapped dirt. The best part is that these friendly bacteria compete with the pathogens for resources, food and air. Eventually the pathogens die out due to their inability to compete with the good bacilli. All this happens without harsh chemicals and without backbreaking scrubbing. The probiotics also breakdown the compounds that cause unpleasant odors. Chrisal leaves grout hygienically-clean and fresh smelling, as you can see in the photo. The upper left triangle of floor has been cleaned with traditional cleaners - the lower right triangle of flooring is what the grout looked like after 1 month of mopping with Chrisal – not scrubbing, just mopping.

    "CHRISAL Clean" the Playroom

Chrisalcleanthe_playroomChildren are two to three times more likely than adults to get the flu or colds. It's a good idea to put Chrisal Probiotics to work in the playroom. Often the germs that can cause the flu and other illnesses reside on your child's favorite toy. When our children learn to share we are so proud of them. But, we also need to be aware that they are sharing bacteria, mildew, mold and other germs along with dust mites on their toys as well.

Here are 10 tips to beat bacteria in the playroom:

Encourage hand washing. Before the kids settle in to play take them to the bathroom for a good 20 second hand washing with Chrisal Skin Soap. That's about long enough to say the alphabet once, or sing happy birthday twice. Rinse and towel dry. Then let the games begin!

Wipe down high-touch surfaces. Use Chrisal All-Purpose Cleaner to wipe down low areas on the walls, the handles of drawers, toy chests and cupboards, light switches, nightstands, clock radios, reading glasses, computer keyboards, and desk surfaces.

Properly ventilate. Proper ventilation is also important, so open windows and doors to let fresh air in and circulate the air whenever possible.

Choose area rugs over wall-to-wall carpeting. Children's rooms should have small area rugs that that are washed weekly with CHRISAL - especially during cold and flu season. Flu season spans from November through March, while cold season runs from about September until March or April. If children are playing on wall to wall carpet be sure to give it a good spray with Chrisal Allergy free every 3 days.

Limit play dates during cold and flu season. This may seem harsh, but during flu season an infected child can spread a cold or flu 24 hours before symptoms begin. Children put their hands in their mouths and touch their play toys. During flu season, you may want to discourage sleepovers.

Make sure toys are clean. You can wash stuffed animals in the washing machine weekly with Chrisal during cold and flu season. Plastic toys can be washed with a Chrisal-dampened, clean cloth and be sure to wipe down board game surfaces. Some toys are dishwasher safe and can go in for a sanitizing wash on hot cycle.

Change bed sheets weekly. Sheets and pillows can be a home for germs that cause colds and illness. Bed linens need to be changed weekly. Between changing the sheets, mist the bedding with Chrisal Allergy Free. If your child is sick, this should be done every other day. Allergy Free will also help with allergies by reducing allergens in the bedding.

Keep the dog and cat off the bed. Your children may beg and plead but don't let pets sleep in their bedroom or bed. Your pet's furry coat may be a great hiding place for both germs and allergens. Mist your pet's coat with Chrisal Allergy Free to reduce allergens and pathogens.

Mop the floor. Cleaning hard surface floors with Chrisal Floor Cleaner and water will remove dust, dirt, germs and reduce mold growth. This should be done weekly - especially during cold and flu season.

Teach children to cough or sneeze into a tissue- or in an emergency their elbow - NOT INTO THIER HANDS. Keep plenty of tissues in the house and encourage children to use them. There are antiviral, aloe vera , hypo-allergenic and children's theme tissues. Purchase tissues that your children will like using. It is also important to teach children to throw away tissue after use, not to leave it lying around.
